5 Star Rating The Argument
Fugazi-The Argument *****

Fugazi are almost an entity in the music world rather than a mere band. They are among the elite, the few groups in the history of music who during the course of their career never really made a less than fantastic album: Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Velvet Underground, John Coltrane, and very few more. But what Is even more amazing about this is that all these artists, especially the ones listed experimented extensively, and brought something new and fresh with each release; Fugazi was no exception to this.

By the time of The Argument the groups sound had matured beyond the level at which some bands who have been together for forty years never reach. Musically they were still reaching new ground with their signature fast, slow delivery. Ian's guitar playing specifically had reached new incredibly heights. Lyrically the band was never more poignant.

Tracks like 'Nightshop' showed things in punk, alternative, or whatever style you want to call this that had never been reached. While 'Cashout' was classic Fugazi it was refreshing to hear a little glimpse of the past from a band that was ever changing and reaching for newer, fresher territory, a band that was never just "satisfied." 'Life And Limb' is in a nutshell...breathtaking. But it is at the culmination of the title, and closing track on the album that we realize just how brilliant Fugazi truly. Nothing the group had ever released before could ever hope to compare to this.

This is possibly why the group decided to go on a extended hiatus after the release of this album. This will be a very difficult album to follow up, especially with the anticipation that has built after all these years. What ever the band releases there is a good chance it won't top this, if they ever decide to reform, but who cares it is the fact that they are still willing to make music THEY want that matters. It is that spirit that helps to make the music of Fugazi so damn powerful!

The Argument is a powerful, ambient masterpiece of music in the same vein that Om was for John Coltrane, or that Bitches Brew was for Miles Davis, or even Low for David Bowie, its that epic.

4 Star Rating Fugazi the great
I've seen this band play many times and they rocked my world at each gig. This melodic, edgy, ultra tight, punky/hard-core type band is a must have for anyone who likes loud music. This is one of their many albums and although it may not be their best it is - as expected - filled with greatness and unexpected musical candy.

5 Star Rating Worth the Wait.
I've been hearing about this band forever, and finally bought an album of theirs at random. This one rocks all the way through, and I think these guys deserve their reputation for breaking ground. Not a bad track on the whole album.

3 Star Rating Much respect
I fully respect Fugazi for moving forward musically, but this one was not my cup of tea. I liked all of Red Medicine, about then about half of End Hits.

Repeater was always my favorite.

4 Star Rating Moving, brillaint, beautiful, complex record
I give "The Argument" four stars because there is always room to grow, even though Fugazi expands their pallete with each recording. Never have they made the same record twice. It is perhaps the Fugazi swan song, and I think that it is a pretty sure (and sad) bet at this point that the band has called it quits, though nothing is official.
To put matters simply, they seem to take elements of each record that they have produced before "The Argument" and the result is a rich, textured, abraisive, melodic, and moving document. Raw and well-recorded, Don did another fantastic job at Inner Ear.
Some complain of the abraisive quality in Fugazi's music. I believe that this is part of their beauty---their ability to constantly take risks with their fearless musical visions. It is always funny when people tell me this and they enjoy the music of Sonic Youth, Glen Branca, Deerhoof, etc. While I am into all of these artists, there is something so unsettling about Fugazi. Their records are like the musical equivalents of cinema verite documentaries. They are not out to prove anything cosmic, just to expose what they are feeling at that particular moment in their lives.
I have nothing more to say that has not already been said. If it is indeed the end of the road for Fugazi, arguably one of the greatest punk (and rock) bands of all time, then they ended on a note so high that it is still being grappled with by music-lovers.
Side note: go see the members perform in their new groups. I have yet to see Joe Lally's solo project, but I was fortunate enough to the The Evens in a capacity 50 venue in Columbus. Ian was one of the most down-to-earth people that I have met. I am dying to see Brendan drum in the live incarnation of Bob Mould's new band as well because A. I worship Bob Mould and everything that he has done for this world musically and B. It is Brendan Canty! Incredible talent.

"It's time to harvest the crust from your eyes." Thank you gentlemen. Your music will continue to inspire me for the rest of my days.
